What is Benzyl Alcohol

Benzyl alcohol is a colourless liquid with a mild pleasant aromatic odour. It is a useful solvent due to its polarity, low toxicity, and low vapour pressure. It is partially soluble in water (4g/100mL) and completely miscible in alcohols and diethyl ether.

Uses for Benzyl alcohol

  • Used in formulation of soaps, cosmetics and perfumes.
  • Used as a photographic developer.
  • Bacteriostatic preservative.
  • Treatment against head lice using a 5% solution (Pharmaceutical grade).
  • General solvent for inks and paints.
  • Solvent for lacquers and epoxy resin coatings

Benzyl Alcohol BP may be used as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care products marketed in the European Union at a maximum concentration of 1%.

Benzyl Alcohol is also listed in in Annex III of the European Union Cosmetics Directive. Its use is restricted to solvents, perfumes and flavorings. When Benzyl Alcohol is used as a fragrance ingredient, Annex III requires that the presence of this fragrance ingredient be indicated on the label of the product, and its use is limited to 0.001% in leave-on products, and 0.01% in rinse-off products.
