How to make copper sulfate

This is an easy way to produce copper sulfate either at home, at school or in a laboratory.

Please note: As you will be working with hot water it is important that children are supervised at all times.

Ingredients needed to make your own copper sulfate crystals:

  • Using gloves and goggles add sulfuric acid to copper carbonate or copper oxide until no more dissolves.
  • You will know when you have added enough as no more gas will be produced.
  • Filter the solution through the filter paper in a funnel onto an evaporating dish.
  • Heat the solution gently over a bunsen burner until most of the solution has evaporated and allow to cool.

  • As the crystal grows the level of the saturated solution will drop.

How to make Rock Candy on a stick

The secret to quality Rock Candy (aka Sugar candy) is working with clean equipment and good quality sugar. The process involves using a saturated solution of sugar in water and allowing the sugar to crystallise out slowly.

Please note: As you will be working with hot water and sugar it is important that children are supervised at all times.

Ingredients needed to grow your own rock candy:

  • 2 cups of water
  • 4 cups of granulated sugar
  • Food colouring
  • 1 clean glass jar
  • wooden skewer
  • Clothes peg
  • Tablespoon
  • Cooking pot
  • A cloth
  • Oven Gloves

Instructions on how to make rock candy:

Stage 1 – Producing a saturated solution.

  • Heat the water in a pot until it is boiling.
  • Add the sugar one cup at a time stirring until it is dissolved.
  • When all the sugar has been dissolved remove the pot from the heat.
  • Add food colouring and mix in thoroughly.
  • Allow the solution of sugar and water to cool for 10 to 15 minutes.

Stage 2 – Preparing the wooden skewer.

  • Take a wooden skewer and place it in the clean glass jar.
  • Raise the skewer so that it is 2 cm from the base of the jar.
  • Attach 2 clothes pegs so that they rest across the top of the jar and keep the skew in position.
  • Remove the skewer and wet the section that will be in the sugar solution with water.
  • Dip the wet skewer in sugar so that it has a coating of sugar on it.
  • The skewer is now ready for the rock candy crystals to grow on it.

Stage 3 – Growing the Rock Candy crystals.

  • Carefully pour the dissolved sugar solution into the jar.
  • Slowly drop the wooden skewer into the solution making sure the pegs are in still in position.
  • Check that the skewer is still 2 cm from the base and not touching the sides of the jar.
  • Cover the jar with a cloth and set aside to allow the crystal to grow.
  • Keep out of direct sunlight and away from heaters, radiators etc.
  • The rock candy crystals will start to grow in a few hours.
  • After about a week the rock candy should be large enough to remove.
  • You can leave it for longer to grow as big as you want.
  • When you are happy with the finished results remove it and enjoy.

Notes:

It is very important that during all processes you keep the containers covered to prevent dust getting in which will spoil the crystals.

If the crystals have not started growing on the skewer within 24 hours reheat the sugar/water solution again in a pot adding some more sugar and repeat the process.

Do not try to produce more than one rock candy per jar.
