How To Remove Blood Stains From A Mattress Using Ammonia

You can use an ammonia solution to remove blood stains from a mattress.  Although this method is quite effective, it is not recommended as the ammonia can damage the fibres in a mattress.

What you will need

  • Water
  • Salt
  • Ammonia
  • Cotton Balls

Make the ammonia solution

Mix 1 tablespoon of ammonia with 240ml water.

Instructions

  1. Begin by moistening the stained area with a small amount of cold water.
  2. Cover the stain with salt and allow it to set for up to 2 hours or until it dries completely.
  3. Scrape away the salt layer
  4. Apply the ammonia solution to the area using a cotton ball.
  5. Blot the area with a clean cloth, working from the outside in to remove the stain along with as much of the ammonia solution as possible.
  6. Repeat steps 4-5 as necessary.
  7. As soon as the stain is removed completely (or removed enough that it is not noticeable), clean the entire area with a wet/dry vacuum or a steam vac. If possible, clean with a mild soap and cold water.

Tips

It is essential to remove the ammonia from the mattress to avoid damage to the fibres.

How To Remove Blood Stains From Silk With Ammonia

There are a wide variety of silks, and each may respond differently to the cleaning methods listed. These stain removal methods are only advised for washable silks. Always test a small hidden area first, to ensure that there are no damaging effects to the texture, colour or sheen of the silk. Once the test area goes well, it is safe to work on the stained area.

What You Will Need

  • Ammonia
  • Soft cloths
  • Water
  • Towel

Instructions

  1. Mix 5ml of ammonia with 240ml of water.
  2. Blot the mixture onto the stain with a clean cloth.
  3. Remove it by blotting with a second clean cloth.
  4. Until you are sure the stain is removed, allow the piece to air dry. Either hang it up or lay it flat on a dry towel. This is because if you dry it with heat you could set the stain permenantly
  5. Once the stain is removed, wash as normal according to label directions to remove any residue.

Warnings

Never mix ammonia with chlorine bleach or any product containing chlorine bleach. The resulting fumes are fatal. If you accidentally mix the two, leave the area immediately. Try to open windows and doors to ventilate the area and remove pets from the area.
