What is Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate and what is it used for

What is Sodium Dichloroisocyanurate

Sodium dichloroisocyanurate is the sodium salt of a chlorinated hydroxytriazine and is used as a source of free available chlorine (in the form of hypochlorous acid, HOCl) for the disinfection of drinking-water. A special high active powder containing 65% chlorine which slowly releases chlorine into swimming pools and spas. Stailised to prevent deteriorating effects of sunlight. Easy to dissolve granules that sanitise and disinfect water removing bacteria and algae. It also removes grease and oils helping to keep pool water clean and healthy.

  • Other names: Sodium DiChloroisocyanurate dihydrate; Stabilised chlorine; sodium 3, 5-dichloro-2,4,6-trioxo-1,3,5-triazinan-1-ide; sodium troclosene; troclosenum natricum; NaDCC;
  • CAS No: 51580–86–0
  • EC No: 220–767–7
  • UN No: 3077
  • Mol Formula: C3Cl2N3NaO3
  • Appearance: white granular solid with odour of chlorine
  • Molar Mass: 219.95 g/mol
  • Density: 0.7 g/cm3
  • Melting Point: 225oC
  • Solubility: soluble in water 250g/L
  • pH: 6–7 (1% aqueous solution at 25C)

Uses for Sodium DiChloroisocyanurate

  • Contains 65% available chlorine.
  • Rapidly dissolving granules, which go to work immediately.
  • Release chlorine in low concentrations by constant rate.
  • Sanitizes and disinfects, removes harmful bacteria and prevents algae, mould and fungi forming.
  • Used to sterilise drinking water.
  • Used to chlorinate swimming pools and spas (see below for more info).
  • Used as a disinfectant in raising silkworm, livestock, poultry and fish.
  • Industrial applications include bleaching of textiles.

How to use Sodium DiChloroisocyanurate in pools and spas

Chlorine levels of pools and spas should be maintained from 1–3 mg/L and the pH from 7.2 – 7.6.

To raise the level of free chlorine by 1 part per million or 1mg/L for every 10000 litres of water add 12.5g of Stabilised Chlorine granules. Dissolve the granules in a container and add by dosing into the skimmer or via a pump. Do not use pool until level of chlorine in pool returns to 1–3mg/L.
